NEW BUILDING

Discussion forum and future workshop

Extension
"Attention, construction site!" is the current message at the end of Bahnhofstraße: right next to the border transit camp, a modern extension is being built, which the Museum Friedland has been planning for years. Where cranes and excavators are currently still active, an welcoming and participatory museum building will open in 2025 that will reflect the recent history of migration to Germany, the ever-changing present and encourage discussions about the future.Perspektives
While the permanent exhibition in the station focuses mainly on migration as a result of the Second World War, the new building highlights the paths of people who have immigrated to Germany via Friedland since 2015. From their individual perspectives, the diverse causes of their escape will be narrated, routes and transit routes will be traced, and the complex process of arriving will be conveyed. There will also be space for personal memories, hopes and emotions that manifest themselves in objects or artistic works. The multi-perspective exhibition also makes the controversial positions of the host society visible and encourages the public to discuss and get involved.Functions
The extension will provide even more elementary functions that will enrich the museum's operations from 2025: A large foyer with a café area, a shop and comfortable sitting areas, the seminar rooms that are lacking, offices and a large depot in which the collection of the Museum Friedland can endure the next decades in good condition. In the northern wing, a large area is planned for temporary exhibitions that can highlight new aspects of migration or make artistic positions visible. In order to involve the people in the vicinity of the museum more, the foyer and the seminar rooms will also be usable for external groups.Participation
With its participatory concept, the new house will encourage reflection on how migration is changing society in Germany, what promotes integration or participation and how the future of the migration society can be (co-)shaped. In the future, low-threshold educational programmes and diverse event formats, which are currently being developed and will be piloted in the coming years, will also contribute to this. The new building of the Museum Friedland does not only want to be an exhibition place, but also a discussion forum, event centre, research place and future workshop. A construction diary on the museum's homepage keeps visitors up to date on its development.
